Harvest of the Armor Seed Corn CST plots is complete and we’re working quickly to knock out bean plots and get ready to jump into 2017. This is a process that begins in December and culminates in late October when harvest is complete. Every December we meet with originators and trait providers to determine the very best product and trait offerings available. We then order testing seed for corn and soybeans and set up the types of plots we want to test. January and February are spent getting in test seed and treating for the types of plots we’re planning.

There are usually 25 to 30 Early to Mid Armor Corn Commercial Strip Summary (CST) plots and 25 to 30 Mid to Full Corn CST plots, each functioning as a “rep” of data. For the Armor Soybean CST plots, there will be 50 to 60 locations of 4.4 to 5.0 variety plots. With that many locations, we can take out as much variability as possible to see trends in hybrid/variety performance. We’re not looking for ‘one hit wonder’ products. We’re looking at solid trending performance over many environments/planting conditions. By doing so, we can predict and position products with confidence.

Following are some of the 2016 CST Yield Summaries.

Armor 48-D24* 73.0
Armor 46-D08* 72.7
Armor 49-R56 70.3
Armor 47-R70 70.0
Armor 47-D17 68.3

*The two leading varieties in the trial this year are new Armor Dicamba varieties.

Key Varieties:
1.) Armor 46-D08 - 4.6 maturity, excluder, med-tall plant, good overall disease ratings; all soil types; may “lean” in very productive conditions.
2.) Armor 48-D24 - For 2 years of “in field” testing, 48-D24 has stolen the show! This medium-size plant stands like a tree; excluder; yields on all soil types; may be a little short for early planted clay soils. NOTE: These two dicamba lines are out-yielding the current RR2 standards (Armor 47-R70 and Armor 49-R56) by 2 - 3 bushels!

Armor A1414 201.7
Armor A1340 198.9
Armor A1500 198.0

Key Hybrids:
1.) Armor 1414 – Top yielding line in NE AR, MO bootheel, TN and KY. Southern Rust can be a concern; timely fungicide will resolve.
2.) Armor 1340 – ‘New’ 113 RM hybrid to replace Armor 1330. Strong performance in trials and the original data make this one a no brainer!

Armor A1717 220.1
Armor A1500 209.4
Armor A1100 208.8
Armor A1414 208.3

Key Hybrids:
1.) Armor 1717 - Rarely will you see such dominating performance in a yield trial; boasts a 12-bu yield advantage over the #2 hybrid in the trial; is a must choose for 2017; also #1 in the 2015 data.
2.) Armor 1500 - Solid; high test weight; excellent stalks/roots; did not blow down through 3 summer wind events.

The Armor team is committed to bringing you our very best in product testing and selection. Please contact your local Armor sales agronomist or sales rep soon to discuss your plans for the 2017 planting season.
